Exeter Student Nightline is a confidential and anonymous listening and information service for students at the University of Exeter. We are here to listen to anything you might want to talk about; housing problems, relationship issues, course stresses... even if you just want someone on the end of the phone while walking home at night.
No problem is too big or too small.

We are student-run and affiliated with the national Nightline Association. We are not professional counsellors, but trained student volunteers, here for you to talk through whatever is on your mind.

We hope you’ve all had a restful summer! We wanted to share an update on Exeter Nightline and what has been happening over the past few months.
The Nightline Association was an umbrella charity that provided guidance and support, but didn’t directly oversee our work in Exeter. Sadly, its closure earlier this year has also led to the closure of some fantastic Nightlines across the country.
Exeter Nightline continued to operate independently until the end of the last academic year, and we had a fantastic year - with some of the highest volunteer applications, successful training sessions, and calls with students. Since our closure in May, reviews have been underway from the University about the future of Nightline at Exeter. Progress has been slower than hoped, in part due to communication challenges and vacation periods.
We want to be clear - as a result of these ongoing discussions, our 8pm-8am phone lines and online messaging service will be temporarily paused for Term 1. This decision isn’t due to anything our volunteers have done wrong. It’s part of a wider review into how best to provide safe and effective peer-support at Exeter.
We know this will be disappointing news, especially for our callers and our dedicated team of volunteers. Nightline has always been a safe and supportive space for students, and we are deeply grateful for the love and support from our community.
We’ll keep you updated as soon as we know more and remain hopeful about progress towards reopening our lines in the new year. Whatever the outcome, thank you to everyone who has supported Nightline - this service has always been powered by the dedication of its volunteers and the belief of the student body.
In the meantime, if you’d like to talk to someone, support is always available. Please refer to our SERVICES page for further details.
Thank you for your continued support, understanding, and patience. We hope to bring some better news soon 💙
