The answer below relates to normal operating conditions:
We are currently open from 8pm-8am every night during term time. We try to stay open every night of term but may occasionally have to close; check our Facebook page to stay up to date.
You can call us to talk about anything that you need support with, but some common reasons might be:
- You are upset about something (academic or personal) and want someone to talk to in an anonymous and confidential space
- You are walking home late at night and want to speak to someone to feel more safe
- You need information about something to do within the university
You're welcome to talk about anything you’d like when contacting our service, whether it’s just someone at the end of the phone on a stressful day or a more serious issue, we’re here to listen.
Yes, confidentiality is incredibly important to us, so you can be assured that any communication you have with Nightline will be kept confidential within the service. There are however some extreme circumstances in which confidentiality will be broken, for legal or safety reasons; for more on our confidentiality, see our policies here.(javascript:void(0))
If you call at any time within our opening hours, you will be greeted by a student volunteer saying “Hello, you’re through to Exeter Nightline. Is there anything you’d like to talk about?” Our volunteers are happy to listen to anything that might be on your mind; you don’t have to have a specific issue or problem, you might just want company on a walk home or a non-judgemental space to vent about something that’s stressing you.
Nightline is run entirely by trained student volunteers from the University of Exeter. You might see our current committee or publicity team advertising our service around campus, but all listening volunteers are anonymous.
We are not run by either the University or Students’ Guild and we have no political or religious affiliations. Nightline is based on principles of non-judgement and confidentiality, so we will not make any assumptions about our callers.
Yes, absolutely. As well as our landline service you can also get in touch via our Instant Messenger software or through Skype. For more information about contacting the service, please see our Contact Us page.
Nightline is a listening and information service. We are unable to give direct advice on your personal situation but we can talk through the different options that might be available to you. For general information however, we’re happy to help however we can! If you’re out of data to Google a taxi number we have internet access to hand, and we can also provide information on student services and resources too.
We’re really sorry that that’s the case; in the meantime, we can direct you to some other helplines and support services that may be of interest to you. Please see our additional information page for more details. Samaritans is a good alternative to our service if you cannot get through to us. Their number is 116 123, which is free to call and open 24/7 365 days a year.
